Consultation response to registration pathways and prescribed qualifications

The Council has considered all submitted feedback and made the following decisions after consultation on the registration pathways and prescribed qualification proposals.

Decisions made: 

  • The three new registration pathways were approved and will open to eligible overseas applicants on 1 November 2026.
  • Approved the following changes to be effective 9.30am, 16 April 2026:
    • removal of the requirement for registration in the dental technology scope of practice as a prerequisite to register in clinical dental technology scope of practice
    • that the USA dentist registration licensing examination must include psychomotor clinical skills assessment
    • the prescribed qualification administrative changes to ensure compliance with s12(2) of the Act.
  • The Council has deferred the decision on proposed changes to the oral medicine prescribed qualifications until after further engagement with practising oral medicine specialists and education providers on the proposed medical components required to protect patient safety and meet NZ oral medicine health needs.
  • The Council did not proceed with its proposal that admission to the New Zealand oral health therapy registration examination be extended to those holding a dental qualification.
