The Dental Council (the Council) is reviewing its competencies and several of its standards to better align with contemporary literature and health sector standards on cultural competence, cultural safety and hauora Māori.
The aim is to offer greater clarity and guidance on cultural competency and cultural safety for all, and to better understand hauora Māori with respect to Māori health needs and rights as tangata whenua.
The Council is doing this work in partnership with Te Ao Mārama and sought expert advice from Associate Professor Elana Curtis (Te Arawa) and Dr Belinda Loring (Pākehā) – public health physicians with expertise on cultural safety within healthcare, including co-authorship of a literature review on the role of cultural competency and cultural safety to achieve health equity, and recommended definitions.
The Council will consult on proposed changes to the competencies for scopes of practice, the standards framework and related practice standards, and accreditation standards.
The Council is hosting a number of regional meetings and webinars to allow opportunities for you to engage directly with the Council and Associate Professor Curtis on the proposed changes – which will be shared with practitioners and stakeholders before the start of the series of meetings.
We invite you to participate in this important conversation.
