Prescribing principles released

The Dental Council is pleased to release a set of prescribing principles developed in collaboration with six other responsible authorities.

The Principles for quality and safe prescribing provide a unified and principles-based approach to prescribing to support consistent prescribing practices and to better protect the public.

The principles were informed and influenced by overseas competence frameworks, the Medical Council of New Zealand’s Statement on Good Prescribing Practice, and extensive consultation with the public and prescribing professions.

What you need to know

  • The Dental Council has adopted these principles for prescribing
  • When prescribing, dentists and dental specialists should be guided by the prescribing principles alongside the ethical principles and professional standards set out in the standards framework
  • The principles aim to ensure consistent prescribing practice which is safe, high quality and people centred, irrespective of professional background or practice setting
  • They also offer the flexibility for prescribers to contextualise them to their practice and their patients’ specific circumstances.

With a new annual practising cycle beginning for dentists and dental specialists on 1 October, now is a good time to refresh yourself on the standards framework and familiarise yourself with the new prescribing principles.
