Anyone can be impacted by mental health challenges. As a health practitioner, it is important you are aware of your own mental health and wellbeing, for you, your whānau and your patients.
Leverage existing support
We strongly encourage practitioners to make use of the support networks already available through:
- Your professional association – Organisations like the New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) provide confidential wellbeing resources, peer support programmes, and access to counselling services.
- Your professional peer and colleagues – Whether it’s a trusted colleague, mentor, or your professional peer, open conversations can ease isolation and help you feel understood and supported.
- Your indemnity insurer – Many insurers offer wellbeing support as part of their professional services, including access to helplines or psychological support.
- Your employer – If you have an employer, most workplaces offer Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) who provide free counselling or wellbeing support.

If you're struggling, we encourage you to speak with your GP to discuss what you're experiencing. Early support can make a significant difference.
