COVID-19 – applying for a temporary medical exemption from mandatory vaccination

The Ministry of Health has introduced some changes to the temporary medical exemption application process for people who either have or have recently recovered from a COVID-19 illness, and as a result may be unable to receive a COVID-19 vaccination or booster vaccination due to their COVID-19 illness.

Information about these changes are available on the Ministry website.

Information for employers

PCBUs (employers) who have 2 or more workers can make a group application to apply for temporary medical exemptions because of a COVID-19 illness.

The group application form can be found here.

Please note:

  • temporary medical exemptions accepted will last for 12 weeks from the date the application is considered
  • the group application form must be signed off by a Medical or Nurse Practitioner
  • the Medical or Nurse practitioner who signs off the application will be required to verify the positive PCR or Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) results for each individual covered by the application
  • the PCBU must confirm with the workers that the application is being made and receive their consent
  • no individual workers will need to sign the application form
  • the processing time for these medical exemptions is 5 working days.

If you have individual workers who need to apply for an exemption, this can be done through their own Medical or Nurse practitioner. Details are available here.

Information for individuals

If you either have a current or recent COVID-19 illness, you may be able to receive a temporary medical exemption.

A Medical or Nurse Practitioner will have to apply on your behalf. To avoid duplication, check whether your employer will be submitting a group application that will include your request for a medical exemption before you apply.

Please note:

  • you will need to provide evidence of a positive test result for your COVID-19 illness
  • you do not have to make an appointment in person with your Medical or Nurse Practitioner - please contact your local GP and they will advise you of the options.
